Leisure Actvities

SwansWitney is well endowed with open spaces and recreational areas - such as playing fields - that extend well into the town centre. Langel Common extends between the River Windrush and Cogges whilst other popular open areas include The Leys, Church Green and Woodgreen. Also under the management of the Town Council is a 75 acre Country Park with an integral nature reserve. It includes a large lake whilst the River Windrush meanders through the meadows within the park. Access is gained through Farm Mill Lane or Avenue Two on the Industrial Estate.

SPORT

As mentioned above, the Leys, on the town’s southern side, is a major open space that offers a wide range of sports facilities including chances to play cricket and football. Also on this site is a bowling green and tennis courts as well as a playground for children.

Facilities for playing bowls, tennis, cricket and football are also available at Burwell Fields, King Georges Field, West Witney and Witney Mills. A floodlit artificial turf pitch near Station Lane provides the opportunity to play hockey, football and other similar sports at all times of the year. There is an eighteen hole golf course at nearby Burford and good angling in local rivers.
Alongside Witan Way is the Windrush Sports Centre, an extensive building which incorporates a swimming pool, squash courts, sauna and solarium and facilities for badminton, basketball, gymnastics, martial arts and snooker. Full details are available from the centre’s manager.Christma Lights

ENTERTAINMENT

Witney’s original cinema, the Palace, has long since been converted into a gymnasium and night club but films can still be seen at the Corn Exchange located in the Market Square. The town also has several public halls that are run by the Town Council and are used for social events and concerts as well as being home to the many clubs and societies that function in the town. The Langdale Hall, converted from the former drill hall, is the major hall in the town and one much used for dances and such events as wedding receptions. Burwell Hall is another well used local venue. A full list of events in the town and of the many clubs, associations and societies can be obtained from the Visitor Information Centre in Welch Way.

EVENTS

The Witney Feast Fair, which draws crowds from all parts of Oxfordshire, takes place at the Leys every September and the Witney Carnival, organised by Witney Rotary Club, The Lions Club of Witney and 2120 (Witney) Squadron Air Training Corps, is held on the second Saturday in July each year.
