For
nearly 500 years the Town Hall has been one of the most important
buildings in Witham. It has a chequered history, with parts
of the structure dating to the late 14th century when it was
The George Inn and then, in the 1800s, it became a bank and
was re-fronted in brick. Not to be overshadowed by adjoining
buildings, the front was raised and false windows inserted,
that remain to this day. You might be interested to look at
the brickwork - it is the same as No 10, Downing Street!
In
1993 the building was purchased by the Town Council and a
loving and lengthy refurbishment began. The Heritage Centre,
which was opened in May 1995, and houses the ever increasingly
popular Tourist Information Centre, tells the story of Witham
from the Iron Age to the present day.
To
the rear of the building, a Period Garden has been recreated
in the style and spirit of an early sixteenth century garden.
The garden is an oasis of calm but on sunny lunchtimes is
busy with office and shop workers enjoying their sandwiches!
