Messing about in boats has always been important to Wisbech, the
only port in Cambridgeshire, and shipping has long been part of
its rich heritage. It was at one time more important than the Port
of London. This is reflected in recent developments. The multi-million
pound Nene Waterfront project includes the £4.2 million Boathouse,
which overlooks the 128 berth yacht harbour and has office suites
and business facilities for hire. It also includes a 75 tonne boatlift
and a secure compound for storing boats ashore. The boatlift will
eventually support 125 tonnes. To the right of the photo by Erbie
Murat is the iconic Boathouse, with cafeteria, conference facilities
and offices to let.-

The greatest Wisbech ship owner was Richard Young (1809-71), who
at various times had 43 boats operating from the port.
This magnificent portrait by H F Creighton RA may be seen hanging
in Wisbech Town Council Chamber. It depicts him wearing the Mayoral
Robes that continue to be used today. He was Mayor of Wisbech from
1858 to 1862, Sherriff of London and Middlesex in 1871, and also
MP for South Cambridgeshire from 1865.
As Richard Young died two days after receiving the honour he never
actually wore the robes and insignia in which he is depicted. These
robes were donated to the Council by his widow and are used during
the Mayor-making ceremony each year. A replica of these magnificent
robes is worn for general civic duties.
