Over a weekend every September buildings of every age, style and
function throw open their doors
to celebrate the history and heritage of Wisbech as part of the
national Heritage Open Days.
Visitors are able to enjoy fantastic architecture and culture with
free access to properties that are usually closed to the public
or normally charge for admission. The events are co-ordinated by
the Tourist Information Centre in Bridge Street, which can be contacted
on 01945-583263.
From the depths of the cellars of Wisbech Castle or the Rose and
Crown Hotel, to the top of St Peter’s and St Paul’s
church tower; it is a once-a-year chance to discover hidden architectural
treasures and enjoy a wide range of tours, events and activities
which bring to life local history and culture.
Properties to explore also include The Angles Theatre; Wisbech Working
Men's Club and Institute; Wisbech Museum Library; Friends Meeting
House; Masonic Temple; Octavia Hill Birthplace House; Peckover House;
and Leverington
Road cemetery.
During Heritage weekend the Council Chamber at 1 North Brink is
open every day. This important part of the heritage and history
of Wisbech has often been overlooked, but this beautiful building
and the civic regalia and memorabilia are well worth a visit.
The Council Chamber is available to hire for conferences and functions
and is also in the process of registering for marriages.
If you have any interest please contact the Town Clerk’s office
on 01945 461333.
