Statute and Mart Fairs

One of Wisbech’s traditions is its relationship with the Mart and Statute Fairs. Since at least 1851 travelling showmen and hawkers, on their way between Lynn and Stamford Fairs, have gathered in Wisbech.

The town hosts funfairs in March and September each year on Chapel Road Carpark.

Showmen also attend the annual Christmas Lights Switch On and the Christmas Market in the town centre.

References to fair tolls were made in the first Charter to Wisbech by King Richard I in 1190.

The picture above shows the Leader of Wisbech Town Council, Cllr David Oliver, John Thurston (President of the Showmen’s Guild), the Mayoress Susanah Farmer, and Sonia Jones, Wisbech Rose Queen 2008

Wisbech Youth Council
Over 800 years after that first Charter the Council was proud to see the inaugural meeting of Wisbech Youth Council on 23 September 2008. Seventeen young people attended the first meeting, and committed themselves to setting up a directory for young people, organising a youth extravaganza, developing a questionnaire about mental health services for young people, and many other initiatives.

To join the Wisbech Youth Council young people have to live, earn or learn in Wisbech, and be between 12 and 18 years old.

They meet regularly in the Council Chamber and are fully supported by Wisbech Town Council at 1 North Brink, Wisbech PE13 1JR.
