Uckfield Town Council

Uckfield Town Council is made up of 15 Councillors who are elected every four years. The Town Mayor and Deputy Town Mayor are elected by the Councillors every year.

Big Day Procession The Council has three main Committees - General Purposes, Plans and Environment and Leisure, one sub-committee - Personnel, and four working groups - Best Value, Project Board, Urgent Consultation Panel and Editorial Panel. The Full Council and main Committees meet approximately every eight weeks. The Plans Committee meets every three weeks in order to make observations to Wealden District Council, which is the planning authority.

All Council meetings are held in the Council Chamber, on the first floor, in the Civic Centre and are open to the public. Agendas are available to the public prior to the meetings, on notice boards throughout the town and on the Council’s website. At these meetings members of the public are allowed to speak and ask questions at the discretion of the Chairman of each meeting.

The Town Council has its offices on the first floor of Uckfield Civic Centre, and is open to the public Monday - Thursday 9.00am to 5.00pm and Friday 9.00am to 4.00pm. The Council Office is the first point of contact for all Council services - telephone 01825 762774.

ALLOTMENTS -

Allotments are provided to enable residents of Uckfield to grow produce for their own consumption, whilst enjoying the social aspects of allotment gardening in a green and healthy environment. The Council supports the use of environmentally friendly methods and promotes rain harvesting systems, such as water butts.
Sites are provided at the following locations - Bell Lane, Bird in Eye, Framfield Road, Ridgewood, and West Park.
Plots vary in size and all sites have a water supply.

CEMETERY -

Uckfield Town Council is the burial authority for the town of Uckfield, and the cemetery is situated in Snatts Road. The cemetery has well laid out pathways and taps for watering. Cans are provided and we would ask that they are returned to the water locations after use. Litter bins are provided for the disposal of litter and green waste. There are strict regulations regarding burials and interments of ashes in the cemetery, a copy of which can be downloaded from the council’s website, along with the current charges and fees for the cemetery.

THE CIVIC CENTRE, CIVIC APPROACH, UCKFIELD

The Civic Centre and Weald Hall is conveniently situated in the centre of Uckfield. A suite of 5 various size rooms are available for hire 7 days a week and are suitable for all types of functions or events. The Weald Hall is an extremely well equipped venue with excellent stage, sound, and lighting facilities suitable for any production be they amateur or professional. Civic Centre

ENVIRONMENT SERVICES -

The Town Council employs a head grounds man and 3 full time grounds staff, who maintain all the open spaces owned by the Council within the town. The grounds staff maintain and mark out all sports pitches as required, maintain and water flower beds and floral displays, hedgecutting and carry out other works in woodlands and Local Nature Reserves. The Town Council provides a number of multi-purpose bins throughout the town, playground inspections and cleaning of graffiti. A FREE graffiti removal service is available for residents within the town.

FORESTERS HALL -

Foresters Hall, in Harcourt Road, Uckfield, is available for a variety of functions, including, yoga, meditation, exhibitions, and children’s parties. Enquiries 01825 747790

GRANTS -

The Town Council has been providing grants to local community groups and voluntary organisations for over 10 years. Advertisements are placed in local papers inviting applications each July and completed applications are considered by the Council generally in October. All grants agreed and allocated are for the following financial year and are paid to the successful groups in April the following year. In 2007-08 19 grants were awarded, totalling almost £33,000.

LUXFORDS RESTAURANT -

Situated on the ground floor of Uckfield Civic Centre, Luxfords Restaurant is open Monday to Saturday from 8.30am to 4.00pm and before all Weald Hall events, serving meals, hot snacks and beverages. Luxfords also offers a take-away service. The Restaurant also has a bar with a full on-licence and provides a full in house catering service outside these times from a conference lunch for 6 people to a sit-down banquet for 160 people. - Telephone: 01825 761659.

PLAY AREAS -

The Town Council provides play areas at Downland Copse, Hempstead Lane, Hughes Way, Luxfords Field, Oakwood Drive, Rocks Park, Ridgewood Recreation Ground and Victoria Pleasure Ground. The Council is committed to providing quality play areas and budgets annually to a rolling programme to upgrade equipment and fencing. It is also currently investigating the possibility of providing a new skateboard park and BMX track and a synthetic turf pitch.

PITCHES AND PAVILIONS -

the Council provides a number of sports pitches at Victoria Pleasure Ground, West Park, New Barn Farm and Harlands Farm, which are all available for hire. In addition there are also sports pavilions at Victoria and West Park.

STREET LIGHTING -

The majority of street lights in the town are the responsibility of East Sussex County Council. However, Uckfield Town Council does own 273 lights in various locations throughout the town. The Town Council’s lighting policy is to gradually improve the standards of these lights and then to hand them over to the County Council for future maintenance.

THE UCKFIELD VOICE -

The Uckfield Voice newsletter was launched by the Council in December 2005 and is published quarterly, with free copies distributed to 6000 homes in the town in March, June, September and December. It is also available to download as a PDF file from the website. The Uckfield Voice contains news and information from the Town Council, including contact details for your local Councillors, a calendar of Council and Committee meetings, and current consultations regarding Council services. In addition it also carries news and information from local community organisations and other issues of general interest to residents of the town.

WEALD HALL BOX OFFICE -

Following the success of the pilot season the Council have introduced a full season of entertainment events. For details of the current season of events, please visit the Town Council’s website.
