Since late 2001, Thame and its surrounding villages have been
twinned with the town of Montesson, just to the west of Paris.
Montesson is a thriving community, within very easy reach of the
capital, and itself sits on the banks of the river Seine. The population
is similar in size to that of Thame.
A
number of visits take place between the two communities during the
course of the year. Usually in May, the French visit Thame. Typically,
their visit will include a day trip on the Saturday, but there is
also normally plenty of time to socialise in smaller groups. Convivial
meals often feature on the agenda.
In September, the residents of Thame and district are invited to
Montesson for the annual Fête du Pâté à
la Carmen. The French usually organise an excursion for the visitors
during the Saturday. In the past, this has included river
trips on the Seine, and visits to Versailles and Montmartre. Following
a spectacular firework display on the Saturday night, the weekend
culminates on the Sunday, in a huge barbecue and parade through
the town centre.
During December, the members have been invited to sell typically
English produce during the Christmas market in Montesson, and the
Montessonais brave the English weather to sell their wares during
Thame’s Christmas event.
All residents of Thame, and its surrounding villages, are invited
to get involved. The purpose of twinning is to forge links with
the community in France, and many enduring friendships have already
formed over the last few years. The Twinning Association is keen
to promote any new links with the two towns. Exchanges have taken
place within the respective sixth forms of the two communities,
as well as rugby tours, and a choral society visit to Thame.
If you would like to get involved, there is no requirement to speak
French, but many of those who visit are delighted at how their language
skills improve in a very short time. The cost of the journey is
borne by those travelling, but accommodation is provided by French
families at no cost. In return, members accommodate the French visitors
in May.
