Cuttle Brook Nature Reserve offers 30 acres of semi-wild countryside
just a few minutes walk from Thame Town Centre. The site was purchased
by Thame Town Council in 1978 and to protect the nationally scarce
flood-plan of wet grasslands, the area became designated as a Local
Nature Reserve in 1995. It is now managed for nature conservation,
much of the work being done by the Cuttle Brook Conservation Volunteers.
In May 2011 the volunteers built a new bridge spanning a ditch between
the two hay meadows on the reserve. The bridge is a Chinese design,
copied by one of the volunteers, Dave Watkins, who supervised the
planning and construction. The bridge was built on site in one day
by 10 very enthusiastic volunteers!
The Volunteers are a friendly team who are always looking for new
recruits. They meet on the 1st Wednesday and 3rd Sunday of the month,
at 10am for 2 - 3 hours. If you enjoy hands-on work, or have knowledge
of habitat management, they would love to hear from you. Call Gill
Deacon on 01844 261763.
