The Market has been held on Tuesdays since 1230, the original site
being the Buttermarket and Cornmarket areas. The Buttermarket is
traditionally sited on the cooler north side, the Cornmarket on
the south. The area of Middle Row, which separates the two, originally
consisted of booths that were put up and taken down each week. They
were gradually replaced by more permanent structures, one of these
being the Birdcage.

The Market is now held in the Upper High Street car park and is
a bustling and colourful affair accommodating approximately 42 traders.
A wide variety of merchandise is available including fruit and vegetables,
fresh fish, local meat, eggs, olives and cheese, ladies, gents and
children’s clothes, underwear, books, pictures, toys, linen,
household goods, vacuum cleaners, plants, handbags and luggage,
pet foods, garden ornaments, hats, footwear, cards, china, videos
and CDs, confectionery, bric-a-brac and the very popular WI produce
stall. On the second Tuesday of each month the Farmers’ Market
joins the retail traders, and is made up of farmers and small businesses
selling home-grown and local products.
Thame Market is considered the best market in Oxfordshire, with
loyal customers travelling from far and wide.
