Swaffham is a busy traditional Market Town situated on the crossroads
of the A47 and the A1065. Swaffham is full of Georgian architecture
and has an abundance of fascinating history. The centre of the town
is open and elegant with lots to offer and includes a dominating
structure called the Butter Cross which was built in 1783. It has
8 stone columns which supports a dome surmounted by the figure of
the Roman goddess Ceres. Swaffham is lucky to have one of the finest
medieval churches in East Anglia; the Church of St Peter and St
Paul which was built in the 15th Century. There is also a town sign
which depicts the tale of John Chapman who went to London to seek
his fortune.
Another prominent feature of Swaffham is the two wind turbines which
are located north east and north west of the town. The one located
next to the EcoTech environmental centre is 80m tall and is reputedly
the tallest in the country. On a Saturday the centre of the town
is transformed by the weekly market that takes places. Visitors
from all over the area travel to Swaffham to come to our market.
Swaffham is even more famous now thanks to the Stephen Fry television
series ‘Kingdom’.
