EcoTech, the environmental education centre and visitor
attraction was developed on a derelict factory site in Swaffham
and opened in April 1999.
Energy saving and sustainable development is at the heart of the
project. The building has a Norwegian Spruce frame, harvested from
sustainable sources, and is the largest timber framed building in
the eastern region. The glazed south front transmits solar energy
deep into the building. The northern side is insulated to stop heat,
but automatic blinds on the glazed front and natural ventilation
prevent overheating. A biomass heating system provides additional
warmth, using thinnings from nearby Thetford Forest.
The EcoTech Centre offers a range of educational experiences for
all ages. It caters for a wide variety of organisations including
schools, home education groups, clubs and professional associations.
Visits can be tailored to take into account the needs of a particular
group. It is also open to the public whereby you are able to climb
the 65m to the viewing platform inside the turbine.
