Leisure and Events Stowmarket

Recreation Ground The Recreation Ground was purchased through public subscription after the First World War. The Town Council now own and maintain it and have added a play area and Skate park. The ground is very well used by residents and visitors for many different activities, including the annual Carnival and Fairs in summer time.

The Memorial Gates on the Recreation Ground entrance were erected in memory of those who fell during the Great War and still play a very important part in Civic events, such as Remembrance Day as well as being a focal point of the grounds.

Market The historical charter market is situated in the centre of Stowmarket town which runs on Thursdays and Saturdays. The ancient charter market has been operating in the town since 1347 when Stowmarket was granted a market charter by Edward III and a popular traders market has operated ever since.

The Urban District Council purchased these market rights in 1927 and the market continues to serve local people. Today the market operates on Thursdays and Saturdays selling a range of locally produced goods and offers you a wide selection of goods including, fruit and vegetables, take away food, flowers and plants, meat, fish, gifts, jewellery and more.

For pitch availability and information contact the Town Council Offices on 01449 612060.

Craft Festival The Town Council holds regular craft festivals from March to December at the Museum of East Anglian Life Barn. Stalls range from home-made jewellery, artwork, home-made cards, wooden objects and much more.

Stowmarket Carnival This is a major event in the Stowmarket calendar held on the Recreation Ground within the town and attracts many visitors from far and wide. The event is held in mid summer, usually in mid July and organised by a committee of local volunteers.

Stowmarket Carnival was first created after the Queen’s visit to Stowmarket in 1961 when she visited the trade fair on the Recreation Ground. The following year, 1962 saw the first official Stowmarket Town Hall Fund take place, and in 1978 it was renamed the Stowmarket Carnival. Stowmarket Carnival has continued from that first event and gone from strength to strength.

Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre offers a wide and impressive range of leisure activities including 3 swimming pools, squash, indoor bowls, football, climbing wall, Banana Fitness Suite, a bar and café.

CCTV System Through Mid Suffolk District Council, Stowmarket Town Council and the police working in partnership Home Office funding was gained to install a Town Centre CCTV System. The 11 high quality cameras within the centre of the town have been in operation for two and half years. The system also includes a Town Link Radio Scheme and a data link between the Police Station and the CCTV Control Room in Ipswich. It acts as a valuable and useful tool in helping to police the town and to reassure residents.
