Recreation Ground The Recreation Ground was purchased
through public subscription after the First World War. The Town
Council now own and maintain it and have added a play area and Skate
park. The ground is very well used by residents and visitors for
many different activities, including the annual Carnival and Fairs
in summer time.
The Memorial Gates on the Recreation Ground entrance were erected
in memory of those who fell during the Great War and still play
a very important part in Civic events, such as Remembrance Day as
well as being a focal point of the grounds.
Market The historical charter market is situated
in the centre of Stowmarket town which runs on Thursdays and Saturdays.
The ancient charter market has been operating in the town since
1347 when Stowmarket was granted a market charter by Edward III
and a popular traders market has operated ever since.
The Urban District Council purchased these market rights in 1927
and the market continues to serve local people. Today the market
operates on Thursdays and Saturdays selling a range of locally produced
goods and offers you a wide selection of goods including, fruit
and vegetables, take away food, flowers and plants, meat, fish,
gifts, jewellery and more.

Farmers Market The Town Council manage a very successful
Farmers Market held in the Market Place on the first Friday of each
month. The local produce sold by traders attracts many residents
and visitors.
Craft Festival The Town Council holds regular craft
festivals from March to December at the Museum of East Anglian Life
Barn. Stalls range from home-made jewellery, artwork, home-made
cards, wooden objects and much more.
Stowmarket Carnival This is a major event in the
Stowmarket calendar held on the Recreation Ground within the town
and attracts many visitors from far and wide. The event is held
in mid summer, usually in mid July and organised by a committee
of local volunteers.
Stowmarket Carnival was first created after the Queen’s visit
to Stowmarket in 1961 when she visited the trade fair on the Recreation
Ground. The following year, 1962 saw the first official Stowmarket
Town Hall Fund take place, and in 1978 it was renamed the Stowmarket
Carnival. Stowmarket Carnival has continued from that first event
and gone from strength to strength.
Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre Mid Suffolk Leisure
Centre offers a wide and impressive range of leisure activities
including 3 swimming pools, squash, indoor bowls, football, climbing
wall, Banana Fitness Suite, a bar and café.
CCTV System Through Mid Suffolk District Council,
Stowmarket Town Council and the police working in partnership Home
Office funding was gained to install a Town Centre CCTV System.
The 11 high quality cameras within the centre of the town have been
in operation for two and half years. The system also includes a
Town Link Radio Scheme and a data link between the Police Station
and the CCTV Control Room in Ipswich. It acts as a valuable and
useful tool in helping to police the town and to reassure residents.
Stowmarket Town Forum The Town Forum is a community
group which guides the future of the town. Members of the Forum
include Town Councillors, Officers from the Town Council and District
Council and enthusiastic residents who are interested about the

of Commerce provide business services and representation to promote
the competitiveness of their business members thus contributing
to the wealth and prosperity of their local communities. If you
