things to do

There is a very wide range of things to see and do in St. Neots. Some activities are associated with the many clubs and societies in the town, others are readily accessible to all.

Boating
There are several marinas in St. Neots offering long-term moorings to boat owners, and some have boats for hire. Additionally there are well-marked public moorings along the river banks within the town’s boundaries. The ones closest to the town centre are always the most popular and offer either moorings at pontoons, piled river banks or at the grassy banks of the river.

Rowing is a sport for which St. Neots is justly famous and the Annual Regatta in July brings rowers from far and wide to test their skills on the reach of the river in the town centre.

Dragon Boat and Raft Races and an illuminated boat procession take place in summer during the Annual Carnival.

Fishing
Coarse fishing is extremely popular and much of the river is available for fishing to visitors. Other areas are controlled by the many fishing clubs but who grant day fishing permits to visitors. Rod licenses are available from the Post Offices in St. Neots and Eaton Socon. Chubb, roach, bream, perch and pike live in the river. Nearby is Grafham water, nationally known for its trout fishing.

Walking
The Ouse Valley Way was inaugurated during 2004 and offers a wide variety of scenery and places of interest along its length. It is well signposted and there are ample places to stop and rest and stay the night along its length. Other interesting walks can be taken through the parks and Paxton Pits nature reserve.

The Museum, Tourist and Council
Offices

Have a wide range of self-guided walks available for a small fee – you can study the various aspects of the development of the Eatons, walk around the town centre and even follow the life of a Victorian girl in the town. Guided walks are also available for groups if pre-booked. Interesting suggestions for “Healthy Walks” are also obtainable.

Golf
There are a number of golf courses in St. Neots and the surrounding areas that are open to members and non-members alike.

The Skateboard Park
Situated in Riverside Park this state-of-the-art, newly constructed ramp is available for all and hosts many competitions. A commercial ten-pin bowling with a bar and restaurant is also close to the town centre.

Entertainment
The Priory Centre is the focal point for social activity and entertainment. There are excellent facilities for dances, concerts, theatrical productions, bingo, conferences, exhibitions and trade fairs. The St. Neots Folk Festival in May is one of the highlights in the calendar and the pantomime and other drama productions should not be missed.

There is also a regional real ale festival each year well as a programme of outstanding entertainment. To see what is on offer, log on to www.thepriorycentre.com. The Priory Centre is also licensed for weddings and provides the perfect, riverside setting for such a special day.

The Eatons Community Association organises its annual May Fair on the Green in Eaton Socon. Join in the fun and visit the ancient lock-up. The Ascensiontide Arts & Music Festival Fair each year is fast becoming a feature of the arts’ calendar and offers a range of musical performances to suit all tastes.

An annual Folk Festival is held in May and draws participants from far and wide.
