The Norris Museum takes its name from Herbert Norris, who left his lifetime’s collection of Huntingdonshire history to his native town of St Ives when he died in 1931.

The Museum displays include the fossil remains of the great marine reptiles, relatives of the dinosaurs, who lived in Huntingdonshire 160 million years ago when this area was under the sea. There is a life-size replica of an Ichthyosaur whose bones were unearthed during recent road-building, and relics of the Mammoths that lived here in the Ice Ages. You can see the tools and weapons of prehistoric people, displays on the Roman town at nearby Godmanchester, arms and armour from the English Civil War and old ice skates used in the Fens. A video shows you the Fen skaters in action as well as film of traction engines made by the St Ives firm of Fowell’s.

Our art gallery displays local landscapes and is also used to stage temporary exhibitions. There is a research library and the Museum building is set in an attractive riverside garden. We have full wheelchair access and a bookstall with local history publications as well as postcards, maps and souvenirs. The Norris Museum is administered by St Ives Town Council and is accredited by the Museums Archives and Libraries Council.
