Welcome to the “happiest” town in britain. Whether
you are visiting for a short time, or living here, you will be able
to experience an area described in a recent survey as the “happiest
town in Britain, with residents very fulfilled with life”.
This is due in part to a very active community ethos, with a wide
range of voluntary clubs.
At the same time Sevenoaks is also unique in being surrounded by
the Green Belt, which protects its outstanding surrounding countryside
of rolling hills and villages.
At its heart is an ancient market town, that grew up where historic
roads from North Kent and London crossed the greensand ridge, overlooking
the Kentish Weald, and where archbishops and dukes lived at Knole
House, one of the largest houses in the country.
A large part of Sevenoaks town centre is now pedestrianised, with
speciality shops and restaurants to suit all tastes. It has its
own theatre and cinema - The Playhouse - and there is an annual
Sevenoaks Festival in mid-summer.
The town is also home to two famous golf clubs - Wildernesse and
Knole Park - and the Vine is one of the oldest cricket clubs in
the country. In addition, there are few other sports that are not
represented, many with junior as well as adult teams. For the less
energetic there are many miles of footpaths, through Knole Deer
Park, Sevenoaks Common, hop fields and orchards.
And if all this palls, London is only 30 minutes away by train!
So stay a while, and enjoy all that Sevenoaks has to offer!
Cllr. Richard Parry
Town Mayor 2007/08
