Richmond at Work

Gallowfields Trading EstateThe lifework balance is always a difficult one. Finding beautiful surroundings that offer a calming atmosphere can offset stressful times at work and home and make life more manageable. Richmond offers a tranquil environment, with the reassurance of good schools and low crime rates. Good trade routes and a strong business network add to the attraction of this historic market town. At its heart is a business pulse that offers excellent local supplies, easily accessible support services and a network of business men and women keen to develop the town and reinforce the sense of community.

The Richmond Business and Tourism Association, the R.B.T.A. formed in 1999, is now an established consultation body and a strong voice for local businesses and for tourism in Richmond.

The town has a very successful Graphic Design and Print location, situated on Gallowfields trading estate just outside the town. It draws 70% of its business from a five mile radius of the town and 20% of it from within a 40 mile radius. This local support means that such a firm can develop its technology and its workforce, thus doubling its turnover within two years. Excellent access to the A1 and the A66, and central positioning between Newcastle and Leeds encourage the development of the business.

High-tec businesss premises A software house has also been established in the centre of town. The company supplies bespoke software to the Investment Banks based in the City of London. Founded in 2000, the firm has recently moved premises within Richmond to accommodate the growth of the company. Quality of life is an increasingly important factor in hiring and retaining top software engineers, as are good transport links with quick access to London and abroad in nearby Teesside, Newcastle and Leeds and the availability of broadband and high speed data link. There are in fact several enterprises in Richmond that are involved in web design for local businesses.

Similarly, an organic food distribution business, established in London in 1994, has recently moved to Richmond. It is proving to be a thriving enterprise, delivering organic vegetable bags and other organic products directly to the customer. The company is now planning to take on new premises to expand operations in the area.

Inside the office Another trading estate success which Richmond can also boast of, is that it has the last remaining walking boot manufacturer in England. The firm employs 17 people and makes 150 pairs of boots each week.

The town itself has one medium size supermarket, and two smaller ones , with access to a much larger supermarket premises at Catterick Garrison. Starting in the market place and spreading outwards, you will find a variety of shops many of which promote local foods and crafts, including a dynamic art gallery. There is also a good choice of places to eat within the town and in the surrounding villages.
