Education

Education in Buckinghamshire is divided into two sectors, Primary (5-11 years) and Secondary (11-18 years).
Primary Education In the Primary sector, First Schools take pupils aged from 5-8 years; Middle Schools take pupils aged from 8-11 years. Combined Schools take pupils aged from 5-11 years.
Secondary Education Both grammar and upper schools provide secondary education. Selection for The Henry Floyd, and Aylesbury Grammar schools (both based in Aylesbury) is based on a review of children’s abilities, decided in the main by the 11+, a series of verbal reasoning tests. These tests are carried out by the County and are taken during the final year at middle or combined school. Upper school education is provided at Princes Risborough School. Children whose 12th birthday occurs on or before 31st August normally transfer to the secondary sector in the following autumn term. Normally a place is automatically allocated in the school, which serves the area in which the child lives. However, if parents wish the child to go to another school, they can make application accordingly. The decision to offer a place will rest with the appropriate school’s head teacher and governing body.

Recreation, Leisure and Sport

Cycling The Phoenix Trail, part of route 57 of the National Cycle Network, is an award winning cycle route that follows the disused railway line from Princes Risborough to Thame (some 6 miles). There are many interesting sculptures and excellent views along the Trail, which is well signposted from The Town Centre, and the Railway Station. Details can be obtained at the Information Centre in Horns Lane.

Walking Princes Risborough is one of the few towns that sits on The Chiltern Ridgeway, and as such is a very popular place for walkers, both serious, and not so. There are many footpaths, bridleways, circular walks, and interesting historical sites to visit in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This part of the country offers some of the finest views in the Chilterns, with an abundance of interesting and unusual natural history. This area is an excellent place to see Red Kites soaring over the hills. Details of the varied walks and footpaths can be obtained at The Information Centre.

Riding As well as the many footpaths there are many Bridleways in the area. The Chilterns and surrounding countryside offer fantastic riding terrain. Details available at The Information Centre.

Swimming Risborough Springs Swim and Fitness Centre t.01844 274200

Racing Princes Risborough is quite convenient for both Windsor and Ascot Race courses. The Old Berkeley Beagles and the Vale of Aylesbury Hunt support local Point-to-Point races at Kimble at Easter and Kingston Blount at other times during the season.

Fishing Fishing can be arranged at Thame or in nearby rivers and private lakes.

Cricket There are two Cricket clubs in the parish, one for Princes Risborough, which meets at the Windsor Playing Fields, Horsenden, and one for Monks Risborough, which has its ground in Whiteleaf, next to the Golf Club.
