St. Peter’s Church
St
Peter’s stands in The Square, geographically and spiritually
at the heart of the Town. It was founded in the 11th Century and
has a magnificent arcaded chancel arch (Norman) which led Pevsner
to describe the church as “One of the most interesting Norman
churches in Hampshire”.
Subject to major re-building in 1873 under Sir Arthur Blomfield,
the architect for the diocese of Winchester, project 2000, not only
restored some of the mediaeval aspects of the building but added
many worthwhile facilities appropriate to the 21st Century.
Due to its prime position and excellent acoustics St Peter’s
pursues a policy of encouraging concerts, plays, exhibitions and
civic occasions. Details are always available from the church and
from the Tourist Information Office.
