Paddock Wood Lioness Club was formed in 1989, originally with 20
members. The aims of the club were, and still are, to help those
in Paddock Wood and the surrounding areas who were less fortunate,
as well as those in need throughout the world. The club now has
over 30 members. They have a great deal of fun achieving their aims,
which is done by raising funds through hosting Quiz Nights, Murder
Mystery Dinners, taking their fund raising stalls to various fetes
and carnivals, and much more. The annual “Cow Pat Competition”
raises approximately £1000,
which is always donated to a local charity such as Kent Air Ambulance,
Hospice In The Weald, etc.
The Lionesses are easily recognised when around the town raising
their funds by their green polo shirts and sweatshirts, or their
smart white blouse and green ties.
The majority of funds raised go to support people in the local community
and have provided washing machines, clothes, bedding, holidays for
children and the disabled, all to families in need. The Senior Citizens
in the locality are not forgotten, being invited to attend tea dances
where the Lionesses provide sandwiches, home made cakes, tea and
entertainment.
The Lioness “Joy Boy” project ensures that the local
ambulance service and Air Ambulance crews who attend a situation
where a traumatized child is involved have on board a little cuddly
lion with which the child can be comforted. The child then keeps
the toy to take home with them.
Their latest project, which is supported by Lionesses throughout
the country, is to provide welcome packs to the local hospital.
These contain items such as soap, face flannel, toothbrush and paste,
comb, etc., the sort of items that are much needed by patients kept
in unexpectedly overnight.
The Lionesses are a friendly group, often gathering in each others
houses for social evenings, attending pub quizzes, trips to the
theatre, and other social events.
