One of the council’s objectives is the promotion of healthy
living for all its citizens and there are plenty of opportunities
for keeping fit in North Herts. All towns have lively sports clubs
– for example there are strong amateur rugby teams in Hitchin
and Royston, a successful running club in Letchworth Garden City,
and very popular junior football clubs in both Baldock and Letchworth.
There are 18 hole golf courses in Letchworth Garden City and on
Royston Heath.
Through grants from its area committees the council supports a variety
of local sports clubs – boxing, football, judo and so on –
and has a programme of construction of skateparks across the district.
It also owns four main leisure centres:
Hitchin Swimming Centre, Fishponds Road The beautiful 50m outdoor
pool has become an all-year round facility with the more recent
addition of a 25m indoor pool, café and children’s
play areas. Adjacent is the Archers Fitness Centre, a members only
gym with 80 stations.
North Herts Leisure Centre, Baldock Road, Letchworth. Opened by
the Queen in 1984, the North Herts Leisure Centre boasts a large
swimming pool with paddling area, a wave machine and flume, a sports
hall, squash courts and a gym which has been recently refurbished
and extended.
Letchworth Outdoor Pool This traditional 1930s lido on the corner
of Norton Common is very popular during the summer months. At 50
metres long with wide terraces and plenty of lawned areas it has
an air of spaciousness and relaxation.
Royston Leisure Centre, Woodcock Road, Royston. The latest addition
to North Herts’ leisure facilities opened in September 2005.
It has a 25 m pool, a large sports hall, aerobics studio and a gym
with the latest equipment.
The leisure centres play host to a wide range of sports clubs for
all ages.
