Education Derbyshire Local Education Authority maintains a range
of educational facilities in the town including nursery provision
(at Market Street and St George’s Primary); primary schools
at Hague Bar, Newtown, Thornsett, New Mills County (Meadow Street);
and St George’s Church of England and St Mary’s Roman
Catholic schools. There are many playgroups in the town and private
nurseries and after school clubs at Thornsett and St. Mary’s.
Secondary education is provided at New Mills School, an 11-18 specialist
Business and Enterprise College. Lifelong Learning opportunities
are available through the Youth Service at the Youth Centre on Longlands
Road and the Adult Community Education Service based at Spring Bank.
Sports High Peak Borough Council runs the swimming pool and leisure
centre which was built in the 1980s following a major campaign and
fund raising in the town. There are many clubs in the New Mills
area which offer excellent facilities for sports - especially football,
cricket, golf, tennis and bowls. In 1997 New Mills Football Club
invested over £200,000 with Lottery Funding to improve its
facilities on Church Lane and in 2002 New Mills Golf Club extended
its course from 9 to 18 holes. A brand new club house is planned
for the future.
Health An NHS Health Clinic is situated on Hyde Bank Road adjacent
to Sett Valley Medical Centre which houses a group GP practice and
NHS dentist surgery. There is another GP surgery, a dental surgery,
and an alternative health clinic, all on Union Road. Most acute
services are provided at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport.
Rail and Bus Services Trains to Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield
are available from New Mills Central and from New Mills Newtown
there is an hourly service to Buxton, Stockport and Manchester Piccadilly.
Local bus services provide regular links within the town and to
Hayfield, Glossop, Buxton, Stockport, Manchester Airport and Macclesfield.
On Sundays and bank holidays, buses link the town with many parts
of the Peak National Park especially in the summer months. Full
timetable information is available from the Heritage and Information
Centre, Traveline on 0870 608 2 608 or at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/buses.
Community Organisations New Mills is particularly proud of its community
spirit. Many organisations contribute to making the town a lively
and welcoming place including two long established Brass Bands.
Contact details for local clubs and societies are available at the
back of this booklet.
Visitor Accommodation A variety of accommodation including country
pubs, bed and breakfast guest houses, self catering cottages and
farm based caravans are available in the area. An up to date list
