The Town Council is responsible for all parks and open spaces in
New Mills, including the Torrs Riverside Park, the Town Hall and
the Heritage and Information Centre. It also supports the Town Partnership,
which seeks to bring community benefit to the town, and the twinning
link with Alsfeld, Germany, which began in 1962. The Town Council
works closely with the County and Borough Councils, particularly
with schemes aiming to preserve and improve buildings within the
largest Conservation Area covering the town centre.
The Town Hall houses the Town Council’s offices and Council
Chamber, alongside other services including the County Council Library,
Registrar, High Peak Community Housing officer and Citizen’s
Advice Bureau. The top floor of the Town Hall houses the largest
public hall in the town which is fully accessible from a level entrance
to the rear of the building. Elections take place on a four yearly
cycle for the twelve Town Council members. All formal meetings of
the Council are open to the public (except for items exempt by law).
Details of times/dates etc. are available from the Council’s
website or the Town Clerk.
High Lee Hall and Park were purchased by the people of New Mills
in 1937 and is a beautiful recreation area with gardens, woodland
and a recently planted orchard with traditional varieties of fruit.
There is a large children’s playground and play fountain meeting
Health and Safety regulations. Football pitches are provided at
Newtown, Bakehurst and Ollersett recreation grounds and there are
other playing fields and open spaces throughout the area, many with
children’s playground equipment - at Birch Vale, Newtown,
Watburn Road, Bowden Crescent, Diglands, Whitle Road, Ollersett
Avenue, Alsfeld Way, Rowarth, Hague Bar and Bakehurst Estate. The
Town Council also provide land at Ollersett for the provision of
allotments by the New Mills Allotment and Gardening Society.
