Horse Support Services

Newmarket is a centre of equine veterinary excellence that has an international reputation that is justifiably second to none. It supports the needs of both the local Thoroughbred racing and breeding industries and the wider UK and EU horse industries. Its reputation brings a significant number of visitors to the Town every year.

Newmarket has over 2,500 thoroughbred horses in training at 70 training stables. Over 100 veterinary surgeons in private practice and in veterinary institutions look after the health and welfare needs of these horses.

Horse Support Services Two large private veterinary practices, Rossdale & Partners and Greenwood & Ellis, provide 24 hour, 365 day ambulatory services for accidents and emergencies, for the investigation and treatment of sickness and diseases and for the routine day to day work required to maintain the efficiency and integrity of the racing and breeding industries.

The Animal Health Trust is a registered charity based in Kentford, just outside Newmarket. Its veterinary surgeons and scientists provide internationally respected research and diagnostic facilities.

Such a large horse population needs specialist support services, including farriers, saddlers and horse supply shops and even an equine swimming pool. These form an essential part of Newmarket’s horseracing industry.
