Newmarket Racecourses
Uniquely
Newmarket is the home to two distinct and remarkable racecourses,
each offering world class racing. The larger of the two, Rowley
Mile stages meetings throughout the spring and autumn whereas the
picturesque July Course features racing during the summer months.
The Rowley Mile combines tradition and historic status with the
state of the art facilities for the 21st racegoer. The Millennium
Grandstand’s contemporary and dramatic architecture dominates
the Suffolk skyline and offers spectacular views over the course
and surrounding countryside. Following the completion of a multi-million
pound development project, the Grandstand was opened by Her Majesty
the Queen on Two Thousand Guineas Day in the year 2000.
The course takes its name from King Charles II horse, ‘Old
Rowley’. The first official race in Britain to be run under
written rules, the Town Plate, took place on this course during
Charles’s reign in 1664. The King rode to victory in the race
in 1671.
The Rowley Mile hosts some of the most significant racing in the
world. The first two Classic races of the flat season, the One Thousand
and Two Thousand Guineas, are run on the course in early May. Champions’
Day in October is one of the best individual racedays in the British
calendar, when spectators can witness the crème de la crème
of Europe’s finest equine athletes competing for one of British
racing’s top prizes.
