King Edward VII Memorial Hall and
Gardens was founded on the benefaction of Charles II.
.
That trend has continued and in 1911, Sir Ernest Cassel gave the
King Edward VII Memorial Hall to the Town for the use of its residents.
This civic building and the glorious gardens tucked behind it have
been an integral part of the community over the years. In 1999 the
newly formed Town Council took over the care of the building and
gardens. Under its patronage, the hall has recovered its former
glory and is once again a part of every day life in the community.
The Memorial Hall is currently undergoing
a major £1,200,000 refurbishment and on completion will boast
a modernised hall with new kitchen facilities, a refurbished stage
with a first class PA system and stage lighting, comfortable changing
rooms, an eco friendly heating system, and of course new and squeaky
clean toilets. In addition, the plans will include a new two storey
side extension which will house conference rooms, moving the Town
Council staff to the ground floor to enable better access for residents.
There will be improved disabled access to the stage and first floor.
On completion of the refurbishment, around July 2011, the Memorial
Hall will be available for hire. Please contact Newmarket Town Council
on 01638 667227 if you would like to make a booking.
The Memorial Gardens are an oasis of calm and a place to sit or
walk and enjoy the summer sunshine. The Memorial Gardens Play Area
underwent refurbishment in March 2010 and now includes new toddler
and junior play areas and equipment suitable for disabled users.
A summer program of entertainments in the gardens and the water
feature bring children from far and wide.
