Newmarket can boast a large number
of interesting churches.
.
There are no less than eight in the town - and other beautiful,
ancient, parish churches in villages within easy reach of the town.
Newmarket’s churches are St Mary’s, a flint-clad building
with a stained glass window which was updated by the Victorians
and built on the site of a medieval chapel, located in St Mary’s
Square. Its sister church St Agnes’ on the Bury Road has a
wealth of wonderful artistic and architectural details. All Saints
is a flint clad Victorian building. The church has some fine carved
stone details inside.
Christchurch built in the shape of a crown, on St Mary’s Square,
is home to the Methodist/U.R.C. congregation.
The Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady and St. Etheldreda is the
largest in the town. It is a light and airy mid-twentieth century
building with simple, attractive décor.
Studlands Christian Fellowship is a small modern building out of
town at Studlands Park. The Xchange is a large modern building,
situated in a small industrial estate, which is home to Newmarket
Community Church.
St Philip & St Etheldreda chapel was formerly the Chapel of
Newmarket Hospital, although originally it was a workhouse chapel.
It is the only workhouse chapel in Suffolk that is still in use
as an Anglican church.
