Whatever
your entertainment requirements – the Borough has something
to satisfy you with a rich diversity to attract people of all ages
and all budgets.
Drama, music, dance, art, film, quality restaurants, café
bars, bustling nightspots….the list goes on and on.
Just a few minutes walk from Newcastle town centre is the impressive
New Victoria Theatre, which offers a range of performances to local
audiences and has an international reputation for its professional
work.
The New Vic is the regional producing theatre for Staffordshire.
This means plays are made there with around 10 major productions
each year designed, directed, built, promoted and presented in the
special theatre-in-the-round.
Audley Theatre is also a key venue, hosting mainly amateur dramatic
productions and providing a venue for other performers, such as
musicians.
Also within walking distance of Newcastle town centre is the Borough
Museum and Art Gallery, in Brampton Park. Two galleries at the museum
promote the talents of local artists and introduce new work from
other areas. The museum also specialises in interactive work with
schoolchildren and includes plenty of ‘hands-on’ exhibits.
A ‘Cultural Quarter’ is now well-established in nearby
Hanley and big-name attractions and prestigious touring companies
are regular visitors to the revamped Victoria Hall and Regent Theatre.
If it is the silver screen rather than the stage, then Newcastle
also has the answer with its recently built multi-screen cinema
in the middle of town featuring all the latest film blockbusters.
Newcastle is also well-known for its varied nightlife which helps
attract thousands of people resulting in a flourishing night-time
economy.
It’s possible to start the evening with jazz, order up local
rock groups at another venue, sample the throbbing atmosphere at
a vodka bar just a few steps away and then dance the night away
a busy nightspot around the corner.
However, if a meal is on the menu then there are plenty of options
for diners to get their teeth into in the Borough.
About 20 quality restaurants are mentioned in a county gourmet guide
offering up a mouth-watering range of dishes to tempt all palates
including Indian, Spanish tapas, Italian, Chinese, Thai and traditional
English.
Street entertainers are a regular sight in Newcastle town centre
throughout the year. There is also a programme of traditional Yuletide
music and entertainment in the town and both Newcastle and Kidsgrove
feature impressive, colourful displays of Christmas trees and lights.
Keele Concerts Society, based at the University, is the main provider
of classical musical performance in the Borough. As well as bringing
stars from all over the world to perform in the area, the Society
also works with local schools in organising workshops.
A complete opposite to the delightful classical music performances
can be found at the Chesterton Stadium – the Borough’s
very own speedway venue where fans can swap the strains of cellos
and violins for the high octane thrills of top class riding.
