Newcastle Borough Council

As one of the larger district authorities in the country, Newcastle Borough Council provides hundreds of essential local services to a population of around 120,000.

The authority has its headquarters in the Civic Offices in Merrial Street, Newcastle, and a branch office at Kidsgrove Town Hall. There is also a depot in Knutton Lane, Newcastle, which acts as a base for staff who carry out most of the authority's main service contracts such as refuse collection.

Just over 600 staff are employed by the Borough Council.

Strategic services such as social services and education are provided through Staffordshire County Council.

While the Borough Council continues to provide many services directly to its residents, it increasingly works in close partnership with a wide range of other organisations to help improve the quality of life for local people.

The Borough Council is a key member of the Newcastle Local Strategic Partnership – a body which represents all major public, private, voluntary and community groups in the Borough.

And like many other parts of the country, Newcastle is taking positive steps to improve safety in the Borough through its Safer Communities Partnership. It has seen a series of projects launched to tackle residents’ key concerns over crime.

Consulting and involving residents is now a fundamental part of how the Council operates. The authority manages the 600-strong Newcastle People’s Panel who are regularly consulted on key local issues.

Rubbish Collection And detailed information is distributed to every home in the Borough through the Council’s own newspaper the Reporter which is produced at least five times each year. The Council is also continuing to expand its internet site www.newcastle-staffs.gov.uk which attracts thousands of visitors each week.

A series of priority themes have been developed in consultation with our residents and these are used as a guideline for the services we provide.

The four main areas are:-

• Creating a cleaner, greener, safer Borough.
• Creating a Borough of opportunity.
• Creating a healthy and active community.
• Transforming our Council to achieve excellence.}
