Local and National Government:
Responsibility for local government is divided between four authorities
in Melksham:
Melksham Town Council
- represents local concerns, is consulted by the County and District
on planning issues and looks after open spaces, flower beds, street
furniture, hanging baskets, Foresters Park & Methuen Avenue

Melksham Without Parish Council
- has the equivalent powers of the Town Council within the rural
areas surrounding Melksham - Bowerhill, Bowerhill Lane, Beanacre,
Berryfields, Carnation Lane, Holbrook, Lower Forest, Outmarsh, Redstocks,
Sandridge, Sandridge Common, Semington Road (part), Shaw & Whitley,

- Responsibilities include building and planning regulations, housing,
noise abatement, cemeteries, public health and refuse collection.

Community Groups:
Melksham 1st is a Community Area Partnership. The
Partnership aims to improve the social, environmental, economic
and cultural quality of life for residents and workers in the Community
Area. The community area consists of Melksham, Atworth, Beanacre,
Berryfield, Broughton Gifford, Shaw and Whitley. The group works
on local projects to improve the lives of those living in the area.
Some of the projects they have recently worked on: Community Bus
Project for the elderly & disabled, Skateboard Park, Town Centre
Enhancement, Spring Festival, Walking map showing rural walks in
the area and a Recycling Directory.
Melksham 1st has 4 priority themes:
• Town Centre • Economic Regeneration • Young
People • Transport
