Welcome to March

Under the fountain, built 1911March is a thriving riverside market town in the Fens. It is also the administrative centre for Fenland District Council. The town is surrounded by a unique landscape of rich dark fields in winter, fresh green fields in spring and the rich gold of harvest in the summer. The landscape is the result of years of cultivation, the drainage dykes that criss-cross the landscape and the efforts of the Fen Dykers who worked to drain the Fens in the 17th century. The wide-open skies often give way to spectacular sunsets.

The town benefits from a good range of shops and supermarkets and on the Wednesday and Saturday market days, people from neighbouring villages are drawn in to do their shopping. There are numerous cafés, restaurants and public houses offering a variety of refreshments.

We are a friendly and welcoming town to both visitors and residents and the fact that March is on flat land has seen many people come to live in the area for their retirement. The town is growing fast and now has a population of around 20,000; further growth is being encouraged by the efforts of our local councils and to support this growth new industry at Hostmoor and Longhill is welcomed.

The town centre has been modernised in the last few years with new lighting and a market place that now reflects the town’s railway history. With regular French and Farmers’ Markets, the world famous church of St Wendreda, an ancient Stone Cross and a Museum to be proud of, March is a place to be visited.
