Leighton Buzzard offers a wide range of shops (including many quaint
and specialist shops) in an attractive, historic setting. A network
of streets and shopping mews (some secretly hidden away) lead to
independent specialist shops. The splendid broad High Street, with
many interesting buildings, leads to Church Square and the medieval
All Saints Church.
There is a busy market in the High Street on Tuesdays and Saturdays
and a popular Farmers’ Market, serving local produce, on the
third Saturday of each month. A market has existed since 909 AD
and the charter for the market was granted in 1086.
‘Town Twinning’
began after the Second World War to promote peace and reconciliation,
bringing together countries previously in combat. It centres on
family exchanges and cultural learning. Leighton-Linslade is twinned
with Coulommiers in France, a pretty market town east of Paris which
is famous for its cheese and Titisee-Neustadt in the scenic Black
Forest area of south Germany, a beautiful tourist resort close to
Freiburg.

Leighton Buzzard is a town where history, quality and community
join together to make for a more rewarding shopping experience.
It is justly proud that in January 2006, Director of the Fairtrade
Foundation, Harriet Lamb, CBE, presented the Town Mayor with a certificate
conferring Fairtrade Town status on Leighton-Linslade. This achievement
established Leighton-Linslade as Bedfordshire’s first Fairtrade
Town and reflected the Town Council’s and the townspeople’s
commitment to the campaign. The Town’s Fairtrade status is
supported by many local employers, cafes and shops, and various
schools and churches in the town have official ‘Fairtrade’
recognition.
