Leighton Linslade: Town Council

MarketLeighton-Linslade is situated within the administrative area of Central Bedfordshire and is the second largest market town in Bedfordshire.

The Town Council came into existence on 1 April 1974 with the powers of a Parish Council. It comprises of 21 members representing six wards, and each year one Councillor is elected Town Mayor. The Mayor plays an important role, acting as an ambassador between the Town Council and the general public. The full Council is elected every four years and the next election will be in May 2011.

Apart from the Town Mayor, members are not paid allowances. The only exception is the payment of travelling expenses for official duties outside the town.

The Council has achieved Quality Status under The Quality Parish Scheme. The scheme is designed to provide the benchmark for minimum standards to enable town and parish councils to better represent the communities they serve. Leighton-Linslade Town Council The White Houseworks in partnership with other local authorities and public services in order to provide the best possible service for its residents.

The Council assists, by way of grant funding and officer support, a variety of voluntary and charitable organisations, to enable them to operate for the benefit of the local community.

It has introduced the Title of Dignity, “Honorary Burgess of Leighton-Linslade”, in recognition of the significant voluntary contributions being made by some local residents, to the quality of life in the town.

The Town Council is responsible for allotments, dog bins (in Town Council owned parks), civic events promoted by the Town Mayor, cemeteries, litter bins and benches (in Town Council owned parks), open spaces and play areas, special events, town twinning and youth provision (TACTIC Teenage Advice and Information Centre).

Bandstand It also endeavours to represent the views of local residents in matters such as planning applications, the Town Plan, transport services, etc.

The Town Council Offices are open for telephone enquiries and personal visits from 9:00 until 17.00 Monday to Thursday and from 9.00 until 16.30 on Friday. The offices are closed at weekends.
