Leighton-Linslade
is situated within the administrative area of Central Bedfordshire
and is the second largest market town in Bedfordshire.
The Town Council came into existence on 1 April 1974 with the powers
of a Parish Council. It comprises of 21 members representing six
wards, and each year one Councillor is elected Town Mayor. The Mayor
plays an important role, acting as an ambassador between the Town
Council and the general public. The full Council is elected every
four years and the next election will be in May 2011.
Apart from the Town Mayor, members are not paid allowances. The
only exception is the payment of travelling expenses for official
duties outside the town.
The Council has achieved Quality Status under The Quality Parish
Scheme. The scheme is designed to provide the benchmark for minimum
standards to enable town and parish councils to better represent
the communities they serve. Leighton-Linslade Town Council works
in partnership with other local authorities and public services
in order to provide the best possible service for its residents.
The Council assists, by way of grant funding and officer support,
a variety of voluntary and charitable organisations, to enable them
to operate for the benefit of the local community.
It has introduced the Title of Dignity, “Honorary Burgess
of Leighton-Linslade”, in recognition of the significant voluntary
contributions being made by some local residents, to the quality
of life in the town.
The Town Council is responsible for allotments, dog bins (in Town
Council owned parks), civic events promoted by the Town Mayor, cemeteries,
litter bins and benches (in Town Council owned parks), open spaces
and play areas, special events, town twinning and youth provision
(TACTIC Teenage Advice and Information Centre).
It also endeavours to represent the views of local residents in
matters such as planning applications, the Town Plan, transport
services, etc.
The Town Council Offices are open for telephone enquiries and personal
visits from 9:00 until 17.00 Monday to Thursday and from 9.00 until
16.30 on Friday. The offices are closed at weekends.
