Parks & Open Spaces

In 2010 Huntingdon was named as the overall winner of the Anglia in Bloom contest. The top Anglia in Bloom trophy was awarded to the town after being judged the best overall entry from six competing counties. The town also achieved its second consecutive gold award.

Winning this top award means that Huntingdon has been put forward for the Britain in Bloom contest and judging takes place in August 2011.

Public amenity areas operated and maintained by Huntingdon Town Council can be found at Castle Hills; Victoria Square; King George V Fields at St Peter’s Road and Sapley Road; the Hartford Garden of Rest; the Sebastopol Cannon Site; Sallowbush Green and the Town Park.

Huntingdon’s Town Park is a beautiful park which shelters a number of attractions within the shade of its array of mature trees and shrubbery. A small maze, “fairy ring”, and a snakes and ladder board are all facilities complementing the opportunity to sit on grassed areas or benches on fine weather days and watch the world go by.Bandstand in the Town Park

The park is a heritage space, originally the playing fields of the Grammar School which Oliver Cromwell attended, now the Cromwell Museum.

The park is used by a number of organisations to host events through the year and the Town Council hosts a series of outdoor summer performances from the bandstand.
The Town Council actively encourages local residents and regular visitors to take an active role in the protection, enhancement and improvement of the Park and has worked with local residents to form the Friends of Huntingdon Town Park Group.

Hinchingbrooke Country Park, at the edge of Huntingdon, is a nature oasis. Open grasslands, meadows, woodlands and lakes cover 170 acres with a wealth of wildlife everywhere. A whole calendar of activities and events for adults and children to enjoy are organised throughout the year.

The Great River Ouse, one of the longest navigable rivers in the country affords opportunities for boating, canoeing and other water sports. Boats can be hired from Purvis Marina, Riverside Park, for the day or cruise down the river while enjoying a fine dining experience on the Captain’s Table, Hartford Marina.

Portholme Meadow stretches over 257 acres between Huntingdon, Brampton and Godmanchester and is said to be the largest lowland meadow in England. Samuel Pepys mentions in his diary walking across Portholme with his father and seeing the milkmaids milking the cows. The meadow is now a site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is well know for its variety of wild flowers which is at its best in May. (www.ousevalleyway.org.uk)

Visitors can follow a Historic Town Trail Walk; maps are available from the Town Council’s Office.

Sports Facilities

Football and archery facilities can be found at the Jubilee Sports Field, Kings Ripton Road. Additional football pitches are provided at the Riverside Park and Sapley Park. At the King George V Field, St Peter’s Road, there are facilities for Indoor and Outdoor Bowling, Cricket and Tennis as well as Huntingdon Leisure Centre comprising Swimming Pool, Indoor Hall and Gym. Huntingdon has its very own Olympic Gymnastics Hall in Mayfield Road, where Olympic, Commonwealth and World medal holders train.

The nearest golf facilities are located at Brampton Park, Pidley and St Ives.

Other Leisure Activities

Huntingdon’s Cinema, Cineworld, is located at the Towerfields Leisure Complex on St Peter’s Road, together with a number of restaurants and a Fitness Centre.

Huntingdon has a very active creative arts community and is home to theatre companies such as Huntingdon Youth Theatre, Spotlight Productions, Huntingdon Drama Club and Pantomime 89. Performances from regular and visiting arts companies can be seen at the Commemoration Hall on the High Street or at Hinchingbrooke Performing Arts Centre while the annual outdoor Shakespearean productions are held at the historic George Hotel in the town.

Huntingdon Racecourse is an intimate racing venue with an atmosphere all of its own, it was voted Best Small Racecourse in the South Midlands and East Anglia by race goers.

Stukeley Meadows Skate Park

The Skate Park opened in July 2009 after local skaters had successfully secured funding of over £18,000 from contributions from BIG Lottery, Huntingdon Youth Bank, Huntingdon Freemens Charity, Huntingdonshire District Council and Sainsbury’s. Hunts Skaters had worked with local residents and partner agencies for over six years to identify a suitable location and secure the funding to build the largest and one of the very few street style skate facilities in the country. It is the responsibility of Huntingdon Town Council to carry out the maintenance of the Skate Park.
