Fairtrade is a grassroots movement that has changed the world
and Huntingdon Town Council is proud to be part of that change.
In 2009, Huntingdon Town Council agreed to support the work of the
Huntingdon Fairtrade Steering group and in February 2010 we were
delighted that Huntingdon achieved Fairtrade Status from the Fairtrade
Foundation. This award was given in recognition of support towards
the principle of Fairtrade and the use of Fairtrade products.
Raising the profile of Fairtrade here in Huntingdon contributes
to the overall campaign to secure better prices, decent working
conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers
and workers in the developing world.
The town of Huntingdon has joined over 400 Fairtrade towns, villages
and cities, over 70 Universities and Colleges in the United Kingdom,
(including our own Huntingdon Regional College) in benefiting over
7 million producers in 58 developing countries to achieve independence
and a better life.
The aim of the Huntingdon Fairtrade Steering Group is to publicise
all organisations, businesses, schools and churches who support
Fairtrade in a directory and use local media to advertise our Fairtrade
Status. Various events will be held each year to encourage the awareness
of Fairtrade in Huntingdon.
Many of our local businesses, cafes, restaurants, libraries, churches
and schools are supporting the work of the Huntingdon Fairtrade
Steering Group in a number of ways from selling goods, using a minimum
of two Fairtrade products, to promoting Fairtrade.
It is said that one in two people in the Untied Kingdom recognise
the Fairtrade logo, as you move round Huntingdon look out for it,
you will find it all around the town.
