Industries and Employment Manufacturing remains the town’s largest industrial sector,
employing more than one in five working residents, and the second
largest is retailing and the motor trade. The number of hi-tech
firms, which include an audio cluster and several bio-tech companies,
is increasing. Close links to Cambridge, with its science parks
and graduates, are attracting these businesses to the town.
The town’s businesses include major employers such as Myers
Beds, with several companies employing 250 or more staff. These
include public sector organisations and manufacturing, retail and
distribution companies. However, the majority of firms are SMEs.
Business parks and industrial areas include St Peter’s Road,
Blackstone Road, Stukeley Meadows, Ermine Business Park, Hinchingbrooke
Business Park and the new Beaufort Park.
Unemployment is low with more jobs than working residents. There
are nearly 17,000 jobs but only 10,500 employed residents, of whom
2,700 commute out of the district. This means thousands of people
working in Huntingdon live outside the town. Many residents commute
to Cambridge, Peterborough and London.
Jobcentre Plus is at Hartford Road, careers guidance is available
at the town’s library and several employment agencies are
in the town centre.
Business Link gives support to new and existing companies and Huntingdonshire
Enterprise Agency offers advice for start-up businesses.
