Local Information

Area: Henfield covers an area of 1,762.6 hectares, and is 6 km north to south and 5 km from east to west.

Banks: Barclays, Lloyds TSB, and NatWest banks have branches in the High Street. There is also a Post Office in the High Street.

Car Parks: There are two public car parks, one situated on the west side of the High Street by the Public Library, and the other on the east side adjacent to the Henfield Hall.

Climate: Henfield, being in the south east of England, experiences a mild, sunny and drier climate than many parts of the country. The South Downs form a barrier to the prevailing South-Westerly winds and so the village avoids many of the sea mists that are experienced on the south side of the downs.

Early Closing: Some shops close on Mondays or Wednesdays.

Education: The West Sussex County Council schools normally attended by children from the parish are: Henfield - St Peter’s C. of E. Primary School, Fabians Way. A Church of England voluntary aided primary school with approximately 350 pupils. Steyning - Steyning Grammar School. Comprehensive, located on two sites and having approximately 2,050 pupils.

Farmers Market: Held in the Village Hall Car Park, every third Friday of the month between 9.00am and 1.00 pm.

Fire Station: This is a retained part-time station with a modern appliance. The Fire Service was originally formed in April 1904 and manned by purely voluntary members. It was initially run by the Parish Council until taken over by the District Council and finally, in 1948 by the West Sussex County Fire Service.

Health: Henfield Medical Centre, Deer Park, Henfield BN5 9JQ. 01273 492255. The nearest hospitals with A&E departments are at Worthing, Brighton and Haywards Heath. There are two dental surgeries in the village.

Industries: Industry in Henfield is mainly small and light, and there are several industrial estates in the area.

Library: West Sussex Library Service, adjoining the car park to the west of the High Street. Hours: Mon. Tues. Fri. Sat. 10:00 - 13:00 and 14:00 - 17:00. Thurs. 10:00 - 13:00 and 14:00 - 18:00. Closed Wednesdays. (Tel: 01273 493587)

Parliamentary: Henfield is in the Arundel and South Downs Constituency. The present member is Nick Herbert (Conservative).

Police: In emergency dial 999, for non-emergency calls dial 0845 6070999. Local police are based at the Police Station in Charlton St, Steyning BN44 3LE.

Population: 5,400 approx.

Public Services: Electricity, gas and mains water supply are available in the residential areas of the parish. There is a mains drainage system available in the village and in much of the outlying area.

Public Transport: There are regular bus services to Brighton and Horsham (No. 17) and Burgess Hill and Pulborough (No. 100), with less frequent services to Worthing and to local supermarkets.
