The
twinning with Zierikzee took place more than 50 years ago and developed
from the 1953 tragedy when so many lives were lost during the floods
which devastated the Lowlands of Holland as well as the coast of
East Anglia. The people of Hatfield contributed to the flood relief
fund, part of which was sent to Zierikzee and from this action a
lasting bond was formed.
Zierikzee is the principal town on the island of Schouwen Duiveland,
lying in the delta of the Scheldt and the Maas in the province of
Zeeland. It has a delightful old walled port with an ancient harbour
dating back to the 9th Century.
The Town Council believes that the links between Hatfield and its
European counterpart are of enormous value, particularly to our
young people who benefit by directly experiencing “normal”
life in another country. With this much in mind, a youth exchange
scheme for young people who stay in the home of their “twins”
is organised annually. A mixed programme of activities is laid on
and the youngsters are accompanied
by adult leaders. In the short term the youngsters benefit from
a very enjoyable holiday, but in the long term it is hoped that
the experience will result in increased understanding towards other
nationalities and help to develop international friendship.
The Town Council was awarded a diploma in 2006 by the Council of
Europe for its efforts at promoting the idea of European unity based
on its twinning activities and will also be applying for the Flag
of Honour.
Individuals, groups or organisations interested in “twinning”
or wishing to be considered for the holiday schemes, should contact:
