The Harpenden Trust - Your Local Charity
Even in a community as generally affluent as Harpenden there are
always some who will be suffering hardship, financial or otherwise.
This was recognised in 1948 when the Harpenden Trust was founded
and is still true today.
The Trust seeks to help any needy resident regardless of age, race,
religion or political belief. In addition the Trust regularly helps
school children, provides the elderly with assistance with utility
bills, offers a furniture replacement service, provides weekly coffee
mornings and summer coach outings for the elderly and disabled.
The Trust prides itself on its integrity and deals with all enquiries
confidentially.
The Trust’s income is derived largely from the annual Christmas
house-to-house collection and from donations and bequests. The work
is carried out entirely by volunteers and new helpers are always
welcome.
The Trust office is at the Harpenden Trust Centre, 90 Southdown
Road (opposite the Plough and Harrow PH). It is open Monday to Thursday
from 10.00am to 12 noon. Tel: 01582 460457 (answerphone when office
is closed).
James Marshall Foundation
James Marshall was a landowner and resident within the old ecclesiastical
parish of Wheathampstead which included Harpenden. Upon his death
in 1722, in accordance with his will, a charitable trust was formed
with income from his properties in the parish. Its purpose is to
provide assistance to residents of Harpenden or Wheathampstead who
are under the age of 25 years and who need financial assistance
to improve their career prospects.
It was James Marshall’s intention to help poor children with
apprenticeships to crafts and trades with the purchase of tools
and in some cases clothes. It is now also able to assist with fees,
travel, equipment and books and, through careful management and
maintenance of the properties, is able to help many young people
annually in their training for future careers.
