Leisure

Halstead has plenty of facilities for the enjoyment of most leisure activities, both outdoor and in.

OPEN SPACES include, in Trinity Street, the Public Gardens which form the oldest recreational area in the town. They were created by money raised in 1897 to provide a suitable memorial for Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee and were formally opened in 1902. This is very much a formal park with tree-edged grass areas and attractive flower beds.

Other open spaces are the King George V playing field along Kings Road, the Mill Chase Playing Field, and the Courtaulds Sports Ground along the Colchester Road, all providing facilities for sports such as football and cricket.

River Walk

The river walk has been recently improved and enables access to the nearby countryside.

Halstead’s swimming pool and sports centre, opened in 2004, is located in Colne Road (telephone 01787 472480).

Halstead hosts several community based activities throughout the year including the Halstead Marathon and Fun Run and the Torchlight Procession in December which parades down the town and into the Public Gardens on Kings Road for the Annual Carol Concert.

Clubs in Halstead include those for bowls; cricket; darts and football. The Halstead Town Football Club has its ground at Rosemary Lane (telephone - 01787 472082).

Both the River Colne and Gosfield Lake offer good sport to anglers..

Weavers Court Shopping Arcade

ENTERTAINMENT is catered for at the Empire Theatre in Butler Road (telephone 01787 478308). Halstead can, indeed, be proud of this quite unique community venture which is run by a dedicated band of volunteers. The building, an attractive feature of the town, is used for live shows and bingo throughout the year.

The Queens Hall, a public hall and one of the largest venues in the town, is available for private hire and fund raising events. Meeting rooms and conference facilities are available at the Mill House. Please telephone 01787 476480 for more information.
