This new Town Guide provides useful information about Halstead,
its origins and history. Halstead is a vibrant town with many specialist
shops, restaurants and public houses. The surrounding village population
look to Halstead as a centre for shopping, sport and entertainment.
Many friends meet on Friday at the popular market on the hill.
The Town Council has a special responsibility to cater for the needs
of the growing population and younger generation, but the Council
has to balance these demands and preserve what is best for everyone,
whether it be buildings, open spaces or leisure facilities.
To ensure the economic viability of the town, the Town Council works
in partnership with Braintree District Council and Essex County
Council, and many other public agencies throughout the year, to
develop suitable partnerships which can help keep Halstead at the
forefront of local council development.
I am pleased to introduce this new Town Guide which will provide
both visitors and residents alike with an insight into the town
and its history.
Halstead has a great sense of community pride as any visitor who
walks up the High Street will soon discover. In 2005 & 2006
Halstead won the prestigious Silver Gilt Award for Anglia in Bloom.
This is a tribute to the efforts of a committed team of volunteers
who have worked tirelessly throughout the year to ensure that the
entrances to the town and the floral displays in and around the
High Street are amongst the best in the region. Volunteers have
also improved our river walks, and it is also volunteers who will
help to make Christmas so special for people of all ages.
Thanks to our partnership with Braintree District Council and Essex
County Council the High Street have been further improved over the
last three years with new paving and street furniture.
Halstead is a great place to visit. I am proud of what the town
has to offer and I hope that you will share my pride and affection.
Enjoy your stay.
Mrs Helen Catley
Mayor of Halstead 2006-2008
