Hailsham is twinned with Gournay-en-Bray, a small town in Normandy,
France. Twinning has been in existence for many years and the idea
of it is to foster better relations and gain knowledge and understanding
of different cultures. We enjoy their food and wine, and many of
us spend our holidays there but there is often hostility towards
France, despite it being our nearest neighbour.
The Twinning Charter was signed in Hailsham in October 2000 and
in Gournay-en-Bray in February 2001. Whilst the populations of the
towns differ considerably (Hailsham 20,500 - Gournay 5,000), the
facilities in both towns are very similar. Each is a market town,
has a recognisable town square/centre, a refurbished cinema, a variety
of shops, two industrial areas and a leisure centre.
A number of cultural visits in both directions take place each year.
If you are interested in becoming a member of the Hailsham &
District Twinning Association or would like more information please
contact the Town Council at Inglenook, Market Street or telephone
01323 841702.
