Public Utilities and Services

Since changes in the law have come about, permitting free competition in the supply of all of these utilities, any number of different companies, using the same supply network and equipment may serve an area. Only the most common ones are shown here, and you should check and note your supplier for future reference.

WATER

Metered water supplies are provided to all residential properties in the town, presently by the South East Water Company, the new office being in Kent. (See Useful Contacts page and local telephone directory).

ELECTRICITY

All properties are connected for Electricity supply, with distribution of electricity mainly by the Electricity De France (EDF Energy), which has offices at Hove; or the British Gas Trading Ltd., with offices at Slough, Berks. (See general information page and local telephone directory). Other companies may be found to distribute in the area.

GAS

All comments as for Electricity.

Gas supplies are connected to most properties within the town, with gas being distributed either by Electricity De France (EDF Energy), or British Gas.

TELEPHONE

British Telecommunications Ltd. provide the bulk of the service to home based equipment. Mobile phone networks are also well provided by O2, Vodaphone, Orange, T- Mobile and others.

TV & RADIO

Reception of both television and radio broadcasts in the area is good, with transmitters on high ground overlooking the parish (radio), and a prominent TV mast at Heathfield covering all four main channels. Channel 5 is not yet obtainable except by cable, or satellite signal reception.

There are no normal Planning restrictions for satellite dishes unless obtrusive, offensive, excessive height or size, or intrusive in the Conservation area.

Amateur communication equipment is also used locally by enthusiasts for whom there are several societies.
