Housing

The Housing Department of the Wealden District Council is responsible for local social housing, and has in past years provided a number of developed estates for this purpose.

The largest of these are the Town Farm estate (Bayham Road/Observatory View/Greenwich Road) and Butts Field estate Bowley Road/Swan Road/Archery Walk) in the south-east of the town, and The Diplocks estate (off Western Road) on the west side of the town. The residents The Boship Hotelunder self-purchase schemes have acquired many of these dwellings in more recent years.

Under the provisions of the Housing Acts, the District Council can also make grants to private house owners towards the modernisation or improvement (including some essential repair work) of older or sub-standard dwellings.

Houses and bungalows have been built extensively since 1945 in and around Hailsham by private developers, in accordance with the overall local planning scheme (Local Town Plan) for this parish, and the northern half of the parish is now largely developed right up to the boundary.

More recent government directives will require the further development of areas in and around Hailsham for housing together with increased local infrastructure and services, which are being addressed by the local government authorities, there will undoubtedly be added growth to the town and expansion of its amenities.
