PUBLIC HEALTH Matters
of public health and environmental health are administered by Wealden
District Council. They include the inspection and supervision of
food and milk supplies, shops and factories, housing conditions,
infectious diseases, public sewers, rodent control, collection and
disposal of domestic and trade refuse (including recyclable waste).

The town is served by main drainage to two modern disposal works.
Domestic refuse is collected weekly (days vary), under the CROWN
Scheme, one week normal household waste is collected, the next week
recyclable waste is collected. “Wheelie” bins are provided
free to residential properties.
HEALTH SERVICES Personal
Health Services in the Wealden area are under the control of the
East Sussex Downs & Weald Primary Care Trust (a National Health
Service Trust) whose management headquarters are in Lewes (see Useful
Contacts page and local telephone directory).
Hailsham and Hellingly are served by five NHS doctors’ practices
and four NHS dental practices. In addition, various centres and
clinics, based mainly at Hailsham, Eastbourne, Crowborough, Uckfield,
and Heathfield, operate services covering Mental Health, Family
Planning, Learning Disabilities, and all aspects of local Community
Health.
Hospitals serving this area are located in Eastbourne, Hastings,
Uckfield and Crowborough (see General Information page), and are
managed by the East Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust. Responsible for
general and specialised medicine and surgery, accidents and emergencies,
and maternity services, they provide diagnosis, advice, and treatment
on an in-patient or day patient basis. They are backed up by the
Ambulance and Hospital care services for both emergency and general
purposes.
In addition to the NHS facilities, there are private hospitals at
Eastbourne, a private patient wing attached to the Eastbourne District
General Hospital, and several nursing and care homes in and around
Hailsham, some of which specialise in taking care of patients suffering
from dementia, Alzheimer’s and psycho-geriatric conditions
WELFARE Administered
by two departments of the East Sussex County Council, Adult Social
Care and Childrens Services (including Education) at Lewes, this
includes child protection, and services for children and families,
older people, and others with mental health issues, sensory impairment,
learning and physical disabilities, substance misuse, and HIV/AIDS.
