Health and Welfare

PUBLIC HEALTH Matters of public health and environmental health are administered by Wealden District Council. They include the inspection and supervision of food and milk supplies, shops and factories, housing conditions, infectious diseases, public sewers, rodent control, collection and disposal of domestic and trade refuse (including recyclable waste).

The town is served by main drainage to two modern disposal works.

Domestic refuse is collected weekly (days vary), under the CROWN Scheme, one week normal household waste is collected, the next week recyclable waste is collected. “Wheelie” bins are provided free to residential properties.

HEALTH SERVICES Personal Health Services in the Wealden area are under the control of the East Sussex Downs & Weald Primary Care Trust (a National Health Service Trust) whose management headquarters are in Lewes (see Useful Contacts page and local telephone directory).

Hailsham and Hellingly are served by five NHS doctors’ practices and four NHS dental practices. In addition, various centres and clinics, based mainly at Hailsham, Eastbourne, Crowborough, Uckfield, and Heathfield, operate services covering Mental Health, Family Planning, Learning Disabilities, and all aspects of local Community Health.

Hospitals serving this area are located in Eastbourne, Hastings, Uckfield and Crowborough (see General Information page), and are managed by the East Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust. Responsible for general and specialised medicine and surgery, accidents and emergencies, and maternity services, they provide diagnosis, advice, and treatment on an in-patient or day patient basis. They are backed up by the Ambulance and Hospital care services for both emergency and general purposes.

In addition to the NHS facilities, there are private hospitals at Eastbourne, a private patient wing attached to the Eastbourne District General Hospital, and several nursing and care homes in and around Hailsham, some of which specialise in taking care of patients suffering from dementia, Alzheimer’s and psycho-geriatric conditions

WELFARE Administered by two departments of the East Sussex County Council, Adult Social Care and Childrens Services (including Education) at Lewes, this includes child protection, and services for children and families, older people, and others with mental health issues, sensory impairment, learning and physical disabilities, substance misuse, and HIV/AIDS.

Initial enquiries should be directed to the appropriate client group, which can be contacted by telephone (see local telephone directory for listings).

For emergencies, there is a local “information line” on 0845 6010664.
