Although steeped in history - it is mentioned
in the Domesday Book - Hailsham is also a modern, vibrant town
with a High Street that has a number of unique shops, as well as
several major chain outlets and free parking.
This Guide has been produced with both residents and visitors to
Hailsham and Hellingly in mind. As an historic market town in Sussex,
Hailsham attracts many people wishing to learn more about the past.
This guide is intended as a starting point for them, as well as
a practical reference document for people who are interested in
what Hailsham and Hellingly have to offer in the way of shops, leisure
or recreation facilities and amenities. Whatever you use the Guide
for, I hope you find it informative and helpful.
Hailsham is the largest inland settlement in East Sussex. Yet, whilst
the town is undoubtedly moving with the times, it still retains
its flavour as a market town; indeed, it is the only town in Sussex
that continues to maintain a livestock market. But Hailsham and
Hellingly have far more to offer than just shopping; you can go
for a walk along the Cuckoo Trail, enjoy the wide open space of
the Country Park or the ancient woodland of Park Wood, play sport
in one of the recreation grounds or enjoy a drink and a meal in
one of the many interesting public houses, restaurants and cafes.
The South Downs is just 10 minutes away, and the coast and marina
at Eastbourne within 20 minutes.
More details of what Hailsham and Hellingly have to offer can be
found on the Hailsham Town Council or Hellingly Parish Council websites
or at Hailsham Town Council offices in Market Street (opposite HSBC),
as well as full details of council officers, local councillors and
of the work of the councils, council facilities, current news and
forthcoming local events.
