Over
the years the town has developed in three ways, shops, the service
industry business and housing. The main shopping areas are South
Road, Sussex Road and Commercial Square. The main business area
is in Perrymount Road, where most of the bigger office blocks are
situated, although smaller offices are scattered throughout the
town. This could change in the near future with the redevelopment
of the large station site, which is likely to have a mixed development
of offices, residential and retail. It is hoped that this site will
also provide some form of entertainment such as a Cinema. Haywards
Heath does not have large industrial estates and the two allocated
areas, Burrell Road and Bridge Road have very mixed uses akin to
small businesses rather than large manufacturing units, which are
mainly based three miles away in Burgess Hill.
The
town has many of the well known chain stores, some within The Orchards
precinct like Marks & Spencer, Next, New Look and Superdrug
others such as Boots, W.H.Smith, Woolworths, are in South Road itself.
Over the years other well known names have come to the town like
Country Casuals, Curry’s, Waterstones and Claire’s Accessories
to name a few as well as independent and specialist shops. The Town
has a number of ladies fashion shops covering all age groups and
tastes. Men’s fashion is also covered with a wide range of
fashion from everyday to the less formal.
The Broadway once a busy shopping area has in recent years become
well known as the place to go to eat and drink as it is now mainly
made up of restaurants, wine bars and cafe’s, with culinary
delights to suit the most discerning palate. Here will also be found
popular chain food outlets such as Pizza Express and Café
Rouge with local favourites Zizzi’s and Nizam just around
the corner. The
wine type bars now attract many of the 25-35 age group and serve
as a more acceptable type of night club as many have live music
and special evening themes. They make for a healthy night time economy
for the town.
At the other end of the town Sussex Road enjoys a good mixture of
individual shops ranging from china, electrical goods, nursery goods
and baby clothes to wooden flooring and flowers.
The site where the town’s market once stood for 130 years,
at the northern corner of the town, with its turnover of 100,000
head of livestock a year, is now home to a large Sainsbury’s
Superstore. This is near to the railway station and Commercial Square,
once the hub of the town when the railway was first established.
Part of the revitalisation plan is to look into the possibility
of having another well known supermarket so that there will be a
choice and some competition within the town.
