Welcome to Goole

Goole's pedestrianised centreGoole is a fascinating Victorian town with a Georgian core very much centred around the docks. The port stands on the River Ouse some 50 miles from the North Sea and was developed when the Aire and Calder Canal was opened in 1826, linking it with Knottingley and the Yorkshire coalfields. Goole today is the UK’s largest inland port.

The Port and Town is the third ‘principal town’ in the East Riding of Yorkshire with a population of 18,000 people. Surrounded by Grade 1 agricultural land, the local commercial and industrial base in Goole has developed around port related industries and other industries seeking to utilise Goole’s excellent port, motorway and rail connections. Recent new businesses include Guardian Industries and a major Tesco distribution centre.

Shopping

Goole has a good variety of both national and independent retailers and two markets.

Wesley Square The main centre is pedestrianised and other shopping areas include Pasture Road, Boothferry Road, Wesley Square and North Street. The town’s markets are to be found on Boothferry Road. The Victorian Hall is open Wednesday to Saturday and The New Hall Thursday to Saturday.
