roof tops, towers and chimneys

roof tops, towers and chimneysThis photograph has an array of towers and chimneys. On the skyline are the steeples of Charterhouse School, opened in Godalming on the 18 June 1872, the church spire towering above all, the cupola on the old Town Hall housing the clock built in 1814. Peperharow Road is to the left of the church and Frith Hill to the right.

The roofs in Godalming are clad mainly with ‘Welsh’ slates and handmade clay tiles. The half-timbered building in the centre is the old White Hart coaching inn dating from 1570. In 1734 General Oglethorpe caused a sensation by bringing 10 American Yamacraw Indians to dine here.
