Music in the Park

One of the Town’s evolving traditions is a summer season of concerts held every Sunday afternoon on the Godalming Bandstand.

Opened in September 2005 the new bandstand was created by the GO Godalming Association and, at the time of writing in May 2008, the association has just published its third full programme of summer concerts.

The season of concerts runs from mid- May to mid-September and is normally opened and closed by concerts from the Godalming Band. In the intervening months a varied programme of music is played that invariably includes brass, jazz, rock and a summer ceilidh. All concerts are free and run from 3pm to 5pm. The concerts are open-air concerts and everyone is encouraged to bring their own garden chairs and possibly a picnic - although often ice-cream and soft drinks are on sale during the afternoon. (In the event of wet weather concerts are held in the nearby Godalming Parish Church.)

Information on the current programme of concerts can be obtained from Godalming Town Council’s website (http://www.godalming-tc.gov.uk/page.htm?p=82 ).

Currently the Godalming Bandstand has no roof but by 2009 the GO Godalming Association hopes to raise sufficient funds to erect one through its “raise the roof” campaign. This roof will shade musicians from the summer sun and enable them better to hear their own playing.
