godalming museum

sculptureGodalming Museum is in the busy High Street of this historic Surrey town, in a Grade II listed building, part of which dates back to around 1400. The building has been carefully restored, revealing many intriguing architectural features, including traces of the original wooden window shutters and the scorch marks of medieval rush lights.

A temporary exhibition gallery showcases the work of local artists and craft workers within a varied programme. Exhibitions are usually supported by activities for children. Please ring the Museum for details. Coffee and tea are served in the exhibition gallery or in the peaceful Gertrude Jekyll style garden. Inside, there is a gallery dedicated to the work of this local garden designer and to the associated architecture of Sir Edwin Lutyens.

Local history galleries include touch objects, family trails and an interactive computer programme. What was “jumping the stone”? Who gave birth to 18 rabbits? Can you save the Titanic? There is a wealth of stories and games to explore here.

In the afternoons you can visit the Museum’s local studies library which holds such treasures as Gertrude Jekyll’s planting notebooks, as well as an absorbing collection of local works. The Percy Woods archive is of particular interest to family history researchers.

The Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10.00 to 5.00 (4.00 in winter). The Library is open Tuesday to Saturday, 1.00 to 4.00. Entry is free, but donations are welcomed.
